Rushton starts our discussion with the humble beginnings of Energy Standard from 2017, when he and James Gibson started training a small group of athletes at Gloria Sports Arena in Hungary in preparation for the 2020 Olympic Games. We then turn to topics such as mid-distance training, prepping different athletes for ISL-type of racing, and altitude training camp after the ISL regular season.

Kyle Chalmers, Rob Woodhouse Discuss ‘Jackpot Loss‘ to Energy Standard

For the first time in the history of the ISL, jackpot points decided the winner of Match 8, favoring Energy Standard over the London Roar. If the jackpot points are removed then the London Roar would have actually beaten Energy Standard by the narrow margin of 11.5 points. Neither team received enough penalty deductions to sway the outcome, and their checkpoint points nearly even out.

Until Match 8, jackpot points had only affected the outcome of Match MVPs, but now their value to overall team standings is on display. A point brought up by Barry is that every time 4 or more swimmers get jackpotted, the winner of the race is now up 19 points, more than 2 individual wins. These point swings could affect how a team builds its roster, preferring big stars to a team with depth.

Toronto’s Razzetti and Max Litchfield gave the Titans one more point surge with a combined 27-point pick-up thanks to their check-point bonus points. The Condors were only able to score five points in the event. This put Toronto into the lead by 20 points. Despite matching Cali’s event wins, the skins ultimately decided Cali as match seven winner.

The Cali Condors have done it again with their third match win of the season, but it didn’t go down without a good fight. The Titans entered day two of match seven with the narrow lead over the Condors. Throughout the match, Toronto lost their lead to Cali but re-gained it, twice, including right before the skins events where the Condors soared over the Titans to clinch the match win. Meanwhile, Iron was able to find extra leverage over the NY Breakers to increase their chances of qualifying top-6 into the semi-finals.

Hurley then discusses his swimming career, his coaching career (which included a stint with Chad le Clos and Cam VDB in their lead up to the 2017 world champs), and his commentating career with FINA currently.

Mooney details his Olympic summer as the primary coach for triple gold medalist Kaylee McKeown, from trials to training camp to the Games themself. Mooney divulges that he and Dean Boxall had a mini training camp ahead of the official Olympic camp with both of their athletes in attendance. He talks about the fun he has with Boxall on deck and some of the sets that dropped both of their jaws during the camp.
